In a project with students of the TUHH, concepts for 3D printing of spare parts for the vehicles of the Stadtreinigung are developed. In this way, defective parts can be reproduced quickly and independently on site and the supply of the Stadtreinigung can be maintained.
As part of the initiative Digital4jobs the New Production Institute is implementing an Open Laboratory for Digital Manufacturing to promote innovation and local value creation with digital fabrication tools towards an Industry 4.0 in Tunisia.
On 11th November 2022, the workshop "Legal Issues of Open Source Hardware" of the cooperation partner Bucerius Law School took place at Fab City Haus. Legal issues around the topic of Open Source Hardware (OSH) in the areas of IP rights, licenses and liability were discussed.
Mohammed Omer described the findings of his pilot study in Oman with ten migrant-run microenterprises in the carpentry and steel fabrication industries were reported.
Mohammed Omer explores the need for a conceptualization of open source machine tools (OSMT) and proposes a basic definition for the term. By coining the term, its applicability in low resource contexts is further determined and the potential of OSMT to democratize manufacturing technologies is identified.
From October 12 – 22 , the New Production Institute and Fab City Hamburg team is present at the world’s biggest fabrication event in Bali, Indonesia.
On September 23, 2022, another milestone was reached in the Fab City project, funded by dtec.bw. More prototypes of the Open Lab Starter Kit were presented. A large-format laser cutter and the world's largest open source 3D printer.
In collaboration between the Hamburger Klimaschutzstiftung and The New Production Institute, a research project for urban farming and farming robots was initiated in 2021 at Gut Karlshöhe.
The New Production Institute of the Manufacturing Technology Laboratory, headed by Prof. Dr. Jens P. Wulfsberg and Dr.-Ing. Tobias Redlich, supports the research and development of Hamburg into a Fab City and is supported in this by the Center for Digitization and Technology Research of the German Armed Forces (dtec.bw).
