Solving problems where they arise.

Under this motto, the OpenLab MedTec was ceremoniously opened at the Bundeswehrkrankenhaus Hamburg end of June together with the University President of Helmut Schmidt University Prof. Dr. Klaus Beckmann, Prof. Dr. Jens Wulfsberg & Dr. Tobias Redlich as well as international experts.

⫸ Combining state-of-the-art medical technology and digital manufacturing machines, OpenLab MedTec is one of the first open makerspaces focusing on medical technology development: develop, implement and test ideas on site to avoid cost-intensive production processes.

⫸ A special highlight is the further development of an open-source low-field MRI for mobile use (OSI² ONE), which can be produced for as little as € 20.000 and is thus suitable for use in developing countries, for example. In addition, OpenLab MedTec also offers a space for the education and training of surgeons, where e.g. multilayer and colour 3D printing of organs plays a central role. All developed machines will be made available after completion via open source licences.

⫸ The OpenLab MedTec is operated in cooperation with Helmut-Schmidt-Universität/Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, PTB at the Bundeswehrkrankenhaus Hamburg.
